The principle of Galileo 's mechanics used above was generalised by Huygens and Newton as the principle of mechanical relativity - that the same laws of mechanics hold in any frame of reference moved with uniform rectilinear motion relative to a given frame. A frame of reference relative to which Newton's laws of motion hold is known as an inertial frame. This is - to a high degree of approximation - a frame stationary or in uniform motion relative to the 'fixed stars '1 or -less approximately - relative to the Sun, or - to a yet smaller degree of approximation- for purposes of small-scale mechanical experiments the Earth (since its motion is during periods of time a few seconds long approximately rectilinear).

These papers bring out the circularity of definition but not the asymmetry of dependence. Place and Matter same judgements of spatia-temporal continuity and thus the same judgements of 'same material object', I shall term an MO-invariant group. The MO-invariant group which includes the Earth will be called the E-group, and any member of it an E-frame. Now is Quinton's myth coherent, and, if so, does it show the possibility that there are places not spatially related to each other, viz. that there is more than one space? I shall endeavour to show that, with certain amendments, Quinton's myth is coherent and does show what he wishes to show.
