Beckett had not yet found a way to incorporate depth psychology into his presentations of life.  Nevertheless, the basing of his novel upon autobiographical materials is of great significance, and the unpublished manuscript became an aidemémoire to which he often returned.  Dream makes frequent metaphoric use of water imagery, in which depth and surface are the dual elements. ”Freud uses it; the critics do not.  The anonymous third is Nemo.  Nor, in fact, does Dream, in which settled psyches fix the minor characters in roles that they must repeat unendingly.

Like most of his grand generalities throughout Proust, this bleak sense of existence cannot be found within any single character in the novel — except perhaps briefly, in one of Marcel's depressions during the Albertine affair — and it corresponds not at all to the varied characters and lives of the novel.  Those insights are not philosophical; they are psychological.  We cannot look in detail at Beckett's many appropriations from French criticism and from Ernst Curtius (for which, see Edith Fournier's annotated translation), but a quick survey of some critics is necessary.

But all these would not help him much when he began to write fiction.  James Knowlson's biography has shone bright sunlight on these occult psychological concerns. ”All four works reveal a writer centrally interested in the psyche but unsure of how to dramatize it and all too willing to settle for heavily metaphorical descriptions.  Eliot had praised Joyce's use of the Odyssey in Ulysses and had acknowledged his own uses of such material in The Waste Land.  Jolas relevantly reports Beckett's joining with a few other artists, including his friend MacGreevy, in signing Jolas's manifesto Poetry Is Vertical (1932), which “sought freedom from the purely materialistic conceptions then in vogue’’ (16).
