The principle of Galileo 's mechanics used above was generalised by Huygens and Newton as the principle of mechanical relativity - that the same laws of mechanics hold in any frame of reference moved with uniform rectilinear motion relative to a given frame. A frame of reference relative to which Newton's laws of motion hold is known as an inertial frame. This is - to a high degree of approximation - a frame stationary or in uniform motion relative to the 'fixed stars '1 or -less approximately - relative to the Sun, or - to a yet smaller degree of approximation- for purposes of small-scale mechanical experiments the Earth (since its motion is during periods of time a few seconds long approximately rectilinear).

These papers bring out the circularity of definition but not the asymmetry of dependence. I shall endeavour to show that, with certain amendments, Quinton's myth is coherent and does show what he wishes to show.
